(February 1, 2022 – web) Panama – Cobre Panamá, the mining company situated near the mine, is actively working towards promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural production alternatives in neighboring communities. In line with this commitment, the company has donated a 230m2 cultivation facility (tropicalized greenhouse) to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Regional University Center of Coclé, University of Panama.

Fulgencio Álvarez, Director of the Coclé University Center, expressed gratitude for this contribution and emphasized its significance in strengthening the Agroforestry Engineering program. He highlighted that through this cultivation facility, students can gain valuable knowledge about a technology that has been gaining global recognition for producing food efficiently in confined spaces while minimizing environmental impact.

Approximately 100 students specializing in Agricultural Sciences and Forestry Engineering will benefit from this contribution, enabling them to learn within enclosed spaces where they can control temperature, environmental factors, and humidity to create a microclimate. This technology facilitates out-of-season production, reduces water consumption through automated irrigation, and minimizes the use of phytotoxic chemicals, ultimately ensuring healthier fruit and vegetable harvests.

Miguel Jaén, Manager of Community Affairs at Cobre Panamá, encouraged students to continue their studies and further explore these modern techniques. He highlighted the company’s 12-year commitment to supporting the complete educational cycle of neighboring communities, including programs that promote sustainable production in educational centers and scholarships for higher education.

Through this initiative, Cobre Panamá also contributes to the development and ongoing innovation of the Technical Outreach Program for Producers in Coclé, led by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA). In addition to the cultivation facility, Cobre Panamá has provided a storage facility for supplies, materials, and tools, an irrigation system, and cucumber seeds, which will be instrumental in launching the educational activities of this greenhouse.
