Whilst horse racing is such a highly entertaining sport, the career of equines at times seems short. It’s three to four years of absolute adrenaline rushes, and then sudden goodbyes. So is happening with the Grade 1 winning horse after 2 years of dominance in the equestrian arenas. However, it’s relatively less sad this time.
Son of a legendary horse, Annapolis carried forward the legacy, of War Front, and her sire, Danzig. An absolute favorite of equestrian enthusiasts, the history maker has now retired from this beautiful sport.
History maker retired from horse racing
After amassing a whopping $1, 581,770 in earnings for Bass Racing, the star equine Annapolis has been retired. More than the last few rides, Annapolis will be remembered for his absolute dominance after she burst onto the scene in 2021. In the first seven rides, he didn’t finish below the 2nd rank ever, winning multiple prestigious events in the process as well which included a historical victory as well. In his debut ride at Saratoga Race Course, Annapolis secured an astounding 4 1⁄2 length victory.
Carrying forward the legacy of War Front, he will now enter stud at Claiborne Farm. Annapolis has been stood for a $12,500 fee while being guaranteed a foal stand and a nurse as well. He was trained by Todd Pletcher for the Bass family in barns 2 and 3, and now the history maker is hoping to sire another grade-1 winning equine like himself. From his 13 starts, Annapolis now finishes with a stellar record of 6-4-0.
Annapolis breaks 16-year-old record
It had been 16 years since any 3-year-old horse had won the Turf Mile Stakes. But as soon as Annapolis entered the racing course at Keeneland, the record was broken. However, not only did he win the Grade 1 contest, he posted a stakes-record time as well. Equestrian enthusiasts were left awestruck as Annapolis clocked the timing of 1:33:29, which was 2/5ths of a second off the course record.

Truly a history maker, his other significant victories include Manila Stakes at Belmont and Saranac Stakes at Saratoga, both of which are classified in Group 2 categories. In the prestigious Grade 1 Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes, Annapolis finished runner-up while he was absolutely sensational in the Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont Park.
