Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is a concept that goes beyond just physical well-being. It encompasses mental, emotional, and social health as well. And at Salud, a student-run organization at the University of Pennsylvania, this holistic approach to health is at the core of everything they do.
Founded by Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn, Salud aims to promote health and wellness among the student community. But what sets Salud apart from other health organizations is its unique focus on addressing issues of discrimination and promoting inclusivity.
Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, was inspired to start Salud after experiencing discrimination and anti-Semitism on campus. He realized that there was a need for a safe space where students could openly discuss their experiences and receive support. And thus, Salud was born.
Since its inception, Salud has been making a positive impact on the UPenn community. Through various events and initiatives, they have been able to create a supportive and inclusive environment for students of all backgrounds.
One of the most significant events organized by Salud is the annual Mental Health Awareness Week. This week-long event aims to raise awareness about mental health and destigmatize seeking help. It includes workshops, panel discussions, and self-care activities, all aimed at promoting mental well-being.
Another initiative by Salud is the “Speak Up” campaign, which encourages students to speak up against discrimination and hate speech. Through this campaign, Salud has been able to create a dialogue about these issues and educate students on how to be allies to marginalized communities.
Salud also hosts regular support groups for students who have experienced discrimination or are struggling with mental health issues. These groups provide a safe and confidential space for students to share their experiences and receive support from their peers.
But Salud‘s impact goes beyond just the UPenn campus. They have also collaborated with other organizations to spread their message of inclusivity and promote health and wellness in the wider community. One such collaboration was with the Philadelphia-based organization, “Be the Change,” where Salud organized a health fair for underserved communities.
The positive experiences of students involved with Salud speak volumes about the impact of this organization. One student, who wishes to remain anonymous, shared their experience, saying, “Being a part of Salud has been life-changing for me. I have found a community where I can openly talk about my mental health struggles without fear of judgment. Salud has helped me grow and become more confident in myself.”
Another student, who identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, shared, “Salud has been a safe haven for me. I have found a supportive community where I can be my authentic self without fear of discrimination. I am grateful for the work they do in promoting inclusivity and acceptance.”
Salud‘s impact has not gone unnoticed, and they have received recognition and support from various organizations and individuals. Neil Gajare, the founder of Salud, was recently awarded the UPenn President’s Engagement Prize for his work with the organization. This prestigious award recognizes students who have made significant contributions to the community through their projects.
In addition to this, Salud has also received support from the UPenn administration, who have recognized the importance of their work in promoting a healthy and inclusive campus environment.
Salud‘s positive impact on the UPenn community is undeniable. Through their initiatives and events, they have been able to create a supportive and inclusive environment for students. They have also sparked important conversations about discrimination and mental health, breaking down barriers and promoting understanding.
As Salud continues to grow and make a positive impact, it serves as a reminder that health and wellness go beyond just physical well-being. It is about creating a safe and inclusive space for everyone, and Salud is doing just that. So, let us all raise a toast to Salud and their efforts in promoting a healthier and more inclusive community.
