Yesterday, on May 27, the Joint Meeting of the Committee of Ministers Responsible for the Energy and Water Sectors commenced. The event was led by Minister João Baptista Borges, who emphasized the critical need to discuss and prepare key issues for review and approval by the respective committees.
In the energy sector, discussions centered on progress since the last ministerial meeting, energy supply security, and advancements in the SADC Priority Areas for the Sustainable Development of the Regional Energy Sector. The Proposal on the Development of a Regional Infrastructure Financing Facility (RTIFF) was also discussed. Additional topics included the review of the Agreement amending the 1996 SADC Energy Protocol, regional regulatory initiatives, the promotion of renewable energy sources, and the operationalization of SACREEE as a legal entity.
In the water sector, ministers assessed progress in regional initiatives aimed at improving water and sanitation services, cross-border water projects, and the development of regional infrastructure. The implementation of the regional groundwater program and combined water, energy, and food initiatives were also discussed.
SADC, established in 1980 and transformed into the Southern African Development Community in 1992, consists of sixteen member states. The joint meeting will be preceded by an experts’ meeting from May 27 to 31, 2024.
