“We have a saying here in Ukraine now – ‘young people meet at their friends’ funerals rather than at weddings.’ It’s sad, but very true.” These words from Iryna Yakova, a 29-year-old Ukrainian, reflect the harsh reality of living in a country that has been under Russia’s full-scale invasion for the past four years. As the conflict continues into its fifth year, Iryna looks back at how her life and the lives of her fellow Ukrainians have been forever changed.
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2014 was a shock to the world. It was a blatant violation of international law and a clear threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Many businesses have been forced to shut down, leaving thousands of people without jobs. Iryna herself lost her job as a result of the conflict and has struggled to find stable employment ever since.
But amidst all the chaos and destruction, the Ukrainian people have shown remarkable resilience and strength. They have come together to support each other and their country in this time of crisis. Iryna says, “The spirit of unity and patriotism among the Ukrainian people is truly inspiring. We have seen people from all walks of life come together to defend our country and help those in need.”
The Ukrainian government has also taken steps to support its citizens during this difficult time. They have provided financial assistance to those who have been displaced and have implemented social programs to help those who have lost their jobs. Iryna is grateful for the support she has received, “The government’s efforts have helped us to survive and keep going, despite the challenges we face every day.”
As the conflict continues, Iryna and her fellow Ukrainians are determined to not let it break their spirit. They are determined to rebuild their country and create a better future for themselves and the generations to come. Iryna says, “We will not let this war define us. We will rise above it and emerge stronger and more united than ever before.”
