Turning Waste into Hope: A Youth-Led Model for Sustainable Change

From the beginning, this project was a collaboration between student teams in Japan and Korea. Although we live in different countries, we shared one common question: How can young people reduce waste while supporting families facing food insecurities? Our journey began with a problem we could see clearly in our communities. In Japan, food insecurity is a growing issue that affects many families, while in Korea, there is a significant amount of food waste that could be repurposed to help those in need. We knew that by working together, we could find a solution that would benefit both countries and make a positive impact.

The idea for this project was born when our teams participated in a global exchange program. Through this program, we had the opportunity to visit each other’s countries and learn about our cultures, traditions, and daily lives. During our discussions, we realized that we shared a passion for sustainability and a desire to make a difference in our communities. We also discovered that we faced similar challenges when it came to food waste and food insecurity.

In Japan, we learned that food waste is a significant issue, with approximately 6 million tons of food being discarded each year. This waste not only has a negative impact on the environment but also represents a missed opportunity to help those in need. On the other hand, in Korea, we were shocked to learn that despite being a developed country, there are still many families facing food insecurity. It was disheartening to see so much food being wasted while there were people struggling to put food on their tables.

With these insights, we knew that we had to take action. We wanted to find a way to reduce food waste in Japan while also supporting families facing food insecurities in Korea. After much brainstorming and research, we came up with the idea of creating a food-sharing platform. The platform would connect businesses and individuals in Japan who have excess food with families in Korea who are in need of it. This way, we could tackle both issues simultaneously.

The next step was to bring our idea to life. We reached out to local businesses in Japan and explained our project to them. We were overwhelmed by the positive response we received. Many businesses were eager to participate and donate their excess food to those in need. We also partnered with non-profit organizations in Korea who helped us identify families that could benefit from this food-sharing platform.

As we worked on developing the platform, we faced many challenges. We had to navigate language barriers, time differences, and cultural differences. However, our determination and passion for the project kept us going. We also received support and guidance from our mentors who helped us overcome these obstacles and move forward.

Finally, after months of hard work and dedication, we launched our food-sharing platform. We were excited to see our vision become a reality. The platform was easy to use, and we received positive feedback from both businesses and families. It was heartwarming to know that we were making a difference in people’s lives, even if they were in a different country.

Today, our food-sharing platform continues to thrive, and we have expanded our reach to other countries as well. We are proud of what we have accomplished as a team and the impact we have made. We have also learned valuable lessons about collaboration, teamwork, and the power of young people to bring about positive change.

This project has been a journey of discovery and learning for all of us. We have learned that despite our differences, we can come together and work towards a common goal. We have also realized the importance of addressing global issues such as food waste and food insecurity, and how small actions can make a big difference.

We hope that our project inspires other young people to take action and make a positive impact in their communities. Together, we can create a better and more sustainable world for all. Let us continue to collaborate, innovate, and make a difference.
