The Mining Chamber of Panama (Camipa) positively assessed the start of negotiations for a new contract between the Panamanian government and Minera Panama, S.A. According to the chamber, this process acknowledges the importance of the mining sector in the sustainable development and economic recovery of the country, putting an end to a period of uncertainty following the Supreme Court ruling. In a statement, Camipa reaffirmed the significance of achieving an outcome in the negotiations that benefits all parties involved: the company, the government, and the Panamanian citizens.

According to the association, it is crucial for the agreements reached to “maximize the benefits obtained from the mining sector and, at the same time, send a clear message of confidence to investors that Panama respects the legal security of investments and has appropriately managed the renegotiation.” Camipa emphasized the importance of this negotiation to demonstrate clearly and convincingly that Panama provides fair treatment to foreign investment, which stimulates the influx of capital to drive growth not only in the mining sector but in all economic sectors of the country. At a time when economic recovery depends on the creation of quality jobs and opportunities generated by these investments, these meetings take place after the announcement by the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, regarding the start of conversations with Minera Panama.

Two months ago, the government formed a negotiating team comprising various officials, including the Minister of Trade and Industry, Ramón Martínez, who will act as the coordinator in these negotiations. Other members of the team include the Minister of Economy and Finance, Héctor Alexander, the Minister of Environment, Milciades Concepción, and the Minister of Labor and Labor Development, Doris Zapata, among others.
